Top 10 Movies of the 1980s

The FABNOB Crew recently settled on our top 10 movies of the 1980s.

These celluloid endeavours didn't scoop the Oscars - but they won over our older siblings - and us in due course.

To quote pizza-loving Sean Penn in Fast Times at Ridgemont High these films are "awesome...totally awesome!"

1. E.T. (1982) - "E.T. phone home!" An eight-year-old discovers an Extra-Terrestrial and goes to extra-ordinary lengths to help him elude government officials and return home.  A boy-meets-alien masterpiece!

2. Revenge of the Nerds (1984) - Nerds take on jocks - and win - in a film aptly remembered for one line of dialogue: "We've got bush!" It stars Anthony Edwards pre-E.R. and also features the cult character 'Booger.'

3. Gremlins (1984) - A Steven Spielberg produced horror / black comedy that scared the crap out of children globally. It follows a cute 'Mogwai' critter who spawns some not-so-cute Gremlins - one of whom is killed in a disgusting microwave explosion!

4. National Lampoon's European Vacation (1985) - A long time ago, in a continent far, far away, Chevy Chase was funny! The dysfunctional Griswold family wins a trip to Europe - and the rest is slapstick history!

5. Back to the Future (1985) - "Whoa, this is heavy!" Michael J. Fox plays Marty McFly - a teen who travels back in time with the help of an oddball scientist / DeLorean time machine and accidentally changes the history of how his parents met. Spawned two great sequels. Gold.

6. Stand By Me (1986) - A rites of passage film about growing up and childhood friendship starring a superb kid cast including River Phoenix, Jerry O'Connell and Corey Feldman. Four 12-year-old boys set out to find a dead body in the woods. Bonding ensues, especially after they find themselves covered in leeches!

7. The Goonies (1985) - Goonies never say die! A group of misfit kids embark on an adventure to find One Eyed Willie's buried pirate treasure in order to save their homes from evil property developers. We previously touched on our love of The Goonies. Classic!

8. Ferris Buellers Day Off (1986) - "Bueller? Bueller? Has anyone seen Bueller?" The ultimate high school comedy about a slacker kid in Chicago who wags school - and the principal who wants to bring him down. FBDO was cool in 1986 and remains cool today.

9. Say Anything (1989) - Before Almost Famous and Jerry Maguire Cameron Crowe wrote and directing this memorable romantic comedy. Valedictorian Diane Court falls for aspiring kick-boxer Lloyd Dobler (John Cusack). Best remembered for Cusack clutching a boom-box above his head and great dialogue: "I gave her my heart...she gave me a pen!"

10. Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure (1989) - "Be excellent to each other!" Two dumb dudes (including Keanu Reeves) travel back in time and round up some historical figures to help with a high-school history assignment. Non-bogus moments include Napolean lapping up a local waterslide park and Bill and Ted luring Genghis Khan with a Twinkie!
